The drawers on the stairs and on the optional dresser and chest that can go under the loft bed are dovetailed and on full extension glides. The optional dresser and chest are both freestanding pieces that can be used either under the bed or elsewhere in the room if you preferred.
There is not an option to remove the stairs and add a ladder at a later date.
