You can use whatever type of mattress you prefer (foam, spring, hybrid, latex, etc). The slats will support any of these types of mattresses.
We have a popular 8" and 10" memory foam mattress that people frequently use. Our James Bunk Bed Mattress is 8" and can be used on the bottom bunk and our Oliver Bunk Bed Mattress is 10" and can be used on the top bunk.
