Hi and thank you for the question. I'm going to approach it from the top side and you can use your ceiling height and planned mattress thickness to determine the available headroom.
For the Upton Chestnut Adult Bunk Bed, the guardrails are 16" high and the bed is 71" tall. The mattress will rest at 55" (71"-16") in height. We recommend a low profile mattress. For example these comfortable 5" memory foam mattresses in twin https://thebeanbagstore.com/max-twin-memory-foam-mattress.htm and full-size https://thebeanbagstore.com/max-full-size-memory-foam-mattress.htm.
Assuming you use a 5" mattresses and your ceiling height is 8 ft. (96") we can finish out the headroom calculation.
The mattress rests at 55" and adding the 5" mattress, the top bunk sleeper will be laying at 60". 96" - 60" gives 36" in headroom.
We hope that helps and please let us know if you have any other questions. We are so glad you found something you love!
Best,
