For the top bunk, it is recommended that you have 5" of space from the top of your mattress to the top of the guardrail. The guardrail for the Lily Bed is 16"H, so that means you can use up to an 11" mattress.
For the bottom bunk, you can use any mattress height you prefer, but the higher the mattress, the less space you will have between the 2 beds.
